Crisis Averted, Well At Least For Now...

If you know my husband and me then you know we usually have a good story to tell. Whether we create our own drama or we just have bad luck, crazy things just seem to happen! The good news is that it always ends up o.k. and we can usually laugh about it after the fact. It took me a good nights sleep to be able to discuss the most recent drama.

Last night at around 6ish I was cleaning up from dinner and thought I would be the nice wife (fantasy football widow!) and take the trash out while my husband was enjoying his Sunday football. Well, I had 3 bags to carry including a dirty diaper bag, so my hands were full. I asked my dear hubby to kindly get the second door to the outside. My husband assumed I had the house keys and gently shut the front door to keep Grace at bay for what would be like 3 seconds to open the door to our building. I didn't realize he was going to shut our front door and as soon as he did it, I knew we were in trouble! I frantically asked, " do you have keys?" "No!", he said with a few added expletives. He ran barefoot to the neighbors buzzing every apartment and I could hear him screaming, "my 1 year old is locked in our house, can I please use your phone!" He was going to call his mom who lives maybe 6 blocks from our house. Meanwhile, I am singing and talking to Grace through our front door as she screams and cries, "Mama, Mama...." It was heart wrenching....the worst few minutes of our lives.

Between the time the hubby called his mom and the maybe 6 minutes it took for her and my sister in-law to get here but which felt like hours, Mike smashed a side window and rescued our darling Grace, who had not left the front door. He is my hero. It was a split second decision - does he wait for what seemed like hours until we were able to reach her OR go in any way he can and prevent her from hurting herself. I don't think anyone in the same position would have done anything differently. Poor Mike was not only ridden with guilt but had battle wounds to boot. He was taken to the ER by his mom as my sister in-law and the best neighbors ever helped clean the window. I owe them all big time. Mike came home 2 hours later with 20 stitches on his hand and arm but it all seemed minor to the thoughts of what could have been. Lessoned learned for both of us - major crisis averted. Thanks best daddy/hubby ever!

The absolute good news is Grace was fine. As the saying goes, "All's Well that Ends Well", and I am glad to say that other than a broken window and a few cuts and bruises that everyone is safe and sound in our household! Thank you, God.
