Mike and I worked with Grace 3 months prior to her 1st birthday on rehearsing, "how old is Grace?". After a few days of asking and showing her our pointer finger, Grace when prompted will proudly waive her pudgy little finger showing us that she is indeed one. I have even caught her when we walk into a store to proactively hold up that finger to announce to the world she is one. So, when Grace woke up on Tuesday morning and I told her with much excitement, "Grace you are one today!", she seriously had this look like...uh, yes I know! However, she still proudly waived that little finger! Lately, in public she has become much more cautious, so that now when we ask her how old she is, she sometimes ignores us. Is it that the trick is getting old or that she now realizes that we know the answer to this question we ask her several times a day! Also, Mike pointed out that when asked a variety of "how olds" like "how old is Fred Savage?" or "how old is daddy?" that she will also hold up her pointer finger to indicate one. So, does she really understand the question for what is - How old she is? Does she just think she is #1 (which I have to agree) or she is simply a well trained monkey !?! When I thought about this it really does make sense and allows me to believe she understands the question and her answer is one. In Grace's perfect world, everything is one - nothing has existed to her before - everything is new and wonderful and why should it be any older then 1! Come to think of it, I never want there to be a day that the world isn't so perfect for her....maybe she should just stay this adorable and innocent forever! Now there's an idea.
